What actually cracks the glass

Glass expands and contracts with temperature. Blast a hot defroster onto an ice-cold windshield and the inner surface heats and expands while the outer stays frozen — that stress races straight through any existing chip. Scraping hard or pouring warm water on ice does the same thing.

Prevent the winter crack

• Warm up gradually. Start the defroster on low and let the cabin heat rise before going full blast.
• Never use hot water to de-ice. The thermal shock can crack even undamaged glass.
• Fix chips before the cold. A quick repair in the fall is far cheaper than a replacement in January.
